Business License information

The Business License Division is a division of the City of Fayette Finance Department. Authority for business licensing ( Chapter 605:, liquor licensing, Section 600.020: and taxation 50.030) is granted by the City of Fayette Code of Ordinances. Judy Thompson, City Clerk, oversees the operations and functions of the City Business License Division.

The Business License Division is responsible for accepting, investigating, processing and determining approval or denial of all applications. Additionally, cigarette taxes and hotel/motel taxes are collected and managed by the Business License Division. In addition to annual Business Licenses, this Division also renews and/or issues temporary business licenses, liquor licenses, caterer’s permits, taxi/limousine company licenses, chauffeur’s (taxi driver) licenses, armed and unarmed guard licenses, solicitor’s permits, waste hauler permits, junk dealer permits, animal tags, special permits to nonprofit enterprises and transportation network operator (TNO) permits.

RETAIL BUSINESSES ONLY: A valid MO retail sales license is required if your business sells goods at retail. Missouri law mandates that a Certificate of No Tax Due from the MO Department of Revenue is required before renewing and City business license.

A Missouri sales tax number, if applicable, may be obtained by contacting the Missouri Department of Revenue in Jefferson City, MO at (573)751-3505, prior to submitting your application.

WHAT IS A BUSINESS LICENSE?
The term of a Business License is July 1st of each year until the June 30th of the following year. A renewal notice shall be mailed to each licensee on or before June 1st informing him/her that the license shall expire on June 30th of that year unless otherwise renewed.
Please complete the forms and return them to City Hall along with the proper payment for applicable fees. Your business license will be mailed to you after payment has been received, all required information has been obtained, and upon application approval by the Business License Administrator. This license must be posted in a conspicuous location at the place of business.

HOW MUCH FOR APPLICATION FEE?
The fiscal year for business licenses begins on July 1 and ends on June 30 of each calendar year. Businesses opening at anytime during this period are asked to estimate their gross receipts to the end of this fiscal period. All applications must be accompanied by a $36 application fee.

DO I NEED TO PROVIDE PROOF OF WORKERS COMPENSATION INSURANCE?
Proof of Workers’ Compensation insurance, in the form of a Certificate of Insurance, must be provided by all construction industry businesses with five (5) or more employees.
